A great light went out in the Bahamas last night... my grandmother passed away at the age of 83. I came to the Bahamas this summer to help take care of her as she had Alzheimers. Someone said to me before my trip that even Alzheimers memories are good memories... certainly slightly different to the many fairs I went to with my Ma when I was a girl when we won a case of soda and when my grandparents used to babysit me and I would pretend to be fast asleep so I could stay over when my parents came to pick me up. The memories I hold of this summer are of dancing bout the room with a mop, making Ma laugh and getting her to sing along to Amazing Grace with me and How Great thou Art. I would wake up to her tapping me on the shoulder as we shared a room this summer and she would smile so sweetly and say "Goodmoring Darling" followed with asking who I was. The impulsive I love you's far surpass the hairpulling and being grabbed or swiped at as you take care of your loved ones primary needs (for those who can't imagine what it's like to take care of someone like so imagine taking care of a baby).

A great light went out in the Bahamas last night... there will be an amazing shining star in the sky tonight as everyone sees in and celebrates the New year.... I will be sadly celebrating a life that is no more.... but so very much in our thoughts and in our hearts and so many treasured memories... I can't begin to imagine how it must feel for my family in Nassau who no longer have her in their day to day activities.... how it must feel to be missing someone who has been part of our lives since we can remember. I wasn't her natural grandchild but neither she nor Pa ever made me feel any different... I was taken into their family as if I was their own. The Christmas I sat with my arm round Ma at a candlelight service doesn't seem so long ago... her calling in with a bag of peanuts with the Tribune, her singing That's Amore, her smile as we left Briland so many years ago... funny this summer as my famil;y sat round planning our Briland trip this summer and I laughed... this sweet lady, my much loved and missed Ma used to plan the trip for the whole family singlehandedly, packing everything for the summer in numbered boxes and get them to the airport to go to Briland.... with no phones, before the Bohengy used to go up there yet these days it takes all of us to pitch in. In Briland I use to ride round on my Ma's bicycle with my 25c for a slush cup... I could go on and on... those are some of my fond memories of a grandmother who may be gone but certainly not forgotten. For any of you who have family members ageing or sick.... say what you have to say to them, tell them you love them and share a special moment with them before it's too late.... I admire and respect my parents for the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual strength they have time and time again shown in taking care of Ma... and not just for taking care of her but leading full and busy lives and being there for everybody else too through their own trials and tribulations, God Bless. As we go into another year... I hope you are all as blessed as to know a special person like my Ma
