College financing Bahamian style |
|
So after sitting the SATs, its time for the college applications. As a Bahamian applying to American colleges, I found this to be terribly frustrating. I needed financial aid , but most Bahamian scholarships and aids require you to show an acceptance letter before you can apply for aid; but in order to get accepted at a college you have to prove to the college you have sufficient funds for your entire college stay.. including living expenses! Talk about a screwed up process.
So I took the route of many Bahamian college aplicants... beg a rich relative to show their bank account and assets in support of my college application. Sad to say the colleges I had in mind, there were no takers...
So that left me with the tried and true, Bahamian 'hustle'... throw a cook-out on long wharf.. and do it over and over again... beg and plead every relative and friend to sell and buy cook-out tickets...
eventually after several such events, a temporary loan from a relative, plus my entire savings (from odd jobs here and there) I had enough to atleast get past the financial proof hurdle for the application.. Now when it came to actually paying the money.. well thats a 'whole odder story chile'.... |
