Not a very happy morning in the Lurker household this morning. This morning Mum got up early and made her breakfast. While waiting for Miss Knowlton to tend the goats, she went out to feed her beloved wild birds. She brushed the snow away from the bird feeders and filled them with the 200 million varieties of seeds that she buys. Then Miss Knowlton came over and said that her doctor phoned her last night at 8:00 PM. Miss Knowlton went for a mammogram last Wednesday and there are two shadows on her left breast. Miss Knowlton may have breast cancer. She goes in next week for a lumpectomy and ultrasound. Of course Mum put on a brave face. But after Miss Knowlton left, Mum let her true feelings bust out. Essentially Mum said that she is being punished, or balanced out for having such a good time while moving to Canada. Her punishment or balancing out, is the Good? Lord taking away her best friend in the world. She feels guilty for being a success and making money with Miss Knowlton. She feels guilty at the pleasures she has known weekly in the discovery of her new life. She feels guilty because she lives better and hasn't suffered like her friends back home in Freeport. And then she cried for a couple of hours for Miss Knowlton. I tried to console her. I told her that religion or God or Jesus had nothing to do with this. I tried to tell her it wasn't her fault that Miss Knowlton was potentially stricken with cancer. I phoned Dr. Danny and put Mum on with him. He told her that advances have been made in technology and that even if it were breast cancer, it could be beaten. Dr. Danny said that he would be present when Miss Knowlton underwent her diagnostic imaging next week. It didn't cheer Mum up. Mum is convinced that God is punishing her for having a good time these past few months. It's almost like she feels that she doesn't deserve to have good times in her golden years. There is nothing that I can do to shake that belief that she has. Like the subject line says: Sometimes I hate what religion does to people. |
